Ethnic minorities of Phuoc Long
Fifty-four ethnic groups have been identified. The Kinh or Viet account for about 87% of the population. Some ethnic groups (the Muong, Hoa and Khumer, Tai and Thai) number over one million each, but others have only a few hundred people. Ethnic minorities count for over seven million people in Vietnam.
Group of S'tieng villagers
The S'tieng, with a population of approximately 50,000 people, are considered as indigenous to the Song Be province. The nucleus of society for them is the village. Each village comprises a few long houses (not more than 10) occupied by families, with a total population of about 100 inhabitants. Each village has its residential area and agricultural lands. The village land, including forests, mountains, streams, etc. is considered as the property of the village community. The S'tieng are masters in the art of catching fish and hunting. They cultivate rice on burnt-over land which is abandoned after a few years.
