NEWS LETTER OF JAPA VIETNAM / SUMMER 2001

1992 Japa Vietnam started to finance programs run by the Pediatrics department of Cao Bang General Hospital. The assistance given by Japa Vietnam concentrated on building an Emergency center for Pediatrics and projects of first care health. Here are some of the main results.

1. Contributions to reduce the death rate of children. The newly built emergency room for children, although not fully equipped, is fulfilling an important task in providing needed emergency aid for seriously ill patients. On the other hand, persons from the districts who have been provided with medical knowledge have moved the patients to the hospital in time saving many children's lives.

2. Raising the medical knowledge for pediatricians of the province and the rural districts. The first training course of pediatric emergency for doctors took place in February 1993. However, in the mean time, medical knowledge and techniques have been renewed and the professional skills of doctors have changed due to the retirement of old doctors and the coming of still inexperienced young ones. We still expect Japa Vietnam to support us to organize further pediatric emergency courses that will help to reduce the death of children.

3. Pushing up basic health education. This is an important activity we have implemented thanks to your assistance. We have already opened 9 training courses on health education for several districts and towns in Cao Bang. As a result of this program local medical personnel have been able to acquire a perfect command of the content and methodology of First Care Health for young mothers. Nurses know now how to take care of children, how to do preventive vaccination and how to discover children's sicknesses, how to prevent some popular diseases and how to look after sick children and bring them to the hospital.
